Space technology: New Agreement Signed at EXCELSIOR Space Industry Day

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was renewed on Wednesday during the EXCELSIOR Space Industry Day, held at the Blue Economy Innovation Centre in Limassol. The agreement was signed by Diofantos Hadjimitsis, the CEO of the Eratosthenes Centre, and Andreas Tsouloftas, president of the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Strengthening Collaboration Between Research and Business

This renewed agreement enhances the long-standing collaboration between the two organisations, aiming to forge stronger links between research activities and entrepreneurial ventures. The announcement highlighted the importance of fostering new opportunities in the field of space technologies, Earth observation, and digital innovation.

“The renewal of the MoU further strengthens cooperation between the two organisations, aiming to connect research with business activity and promote new opportunities related to space technologies, Earth observation and digital innovation,” the announcement stated.

Transforming Research into Practical Applications

During the event, Hadjimitsis underscored the critical role of collaboration between the research community and the business sector. He referred to the PRECiRRI precision irrigation digital platform as a prime example of how research can be transformed into tangible applications that address societal challenges.

“At the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence, we aim for research to be transformed into applications and services that substantially contribute to addressing real challenges of society,” he explained. The PRECiRRI platform utilises Earth observation data and artificial intelligence to optimise irrigation, ultimately helping to conserve vital water resources in agriculture.

Significance of the Partnership for Limassol

From the Limassol Chamber’s perspective, Tsouloftas expressed pride in the partnership, noting that it significantly benefits the local economy. He remarked, “For the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, it is a great pleasure to collaborate with the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence.”

Tsouloftas further emphasised that the presence of a prominent research and innovation organisation in Limassol bolsters the city’s innovation and technology landscape, stating, “We are particularly proud that such an important research and innovation organisation operates in Limassol and contributes to enhancing the city’s innovation and technology ecosystem.”

Paving the Way for Future Opportunities

The renewal of the memorandum signifies a commitment to further strengthen cooperation and explore new business opportunities within dynamic sectors of the economy. The announcement reaffirmed that this collaboration plays a vital role in enhancing the innovation ecosystem of both Limassol and Cyprus as a whole.

“Through collaborations such as this, the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence and the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry contribute to strengthening the innovation ecosystem of Limassol and Cyprus, while highlighting the prospects of the space economy and Earth observation technologies as rapidly growing sectors with significant potential for the economy and society,” it concluded.

Implications for the Space Economy

The partnership between the Eratosthenes Centre and the Limassol Chamber showcases a growing recognition of the importance of the space economy, particularly in relation to Earth observation technologies. As both organisations continue to work together, they aim to unlock new possibilities for innovation and growth in this emerging field.

By uniting research with practical business initiatives, the renewed MoU not only enhances local economic prospects but also positions Limassol as a key player in the broader space technology landscape.
